Nepal’s Gen Z Protests: Leadership Deadlock Continues

Nepal’s Gen Z protesters continue to press for political reform, but consensus on an interim leadership remains elusive days after the resignation of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. The movement, driven by youth frustration and demands for constitutional governance, now faces internal divisions over the next steps amid a fragile transition.

Deadlock Over Interim Leadership

A digital poll conducted on Discord revealed strong support for former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim leader. However, not all factions are aligned—another group has rallied behind Kul Man Ghising, especially after Balendra Shah, who was widely considered the frontrunner, chose to withdraw from the process.

Despite efforts to find common ground, leaders within the protest movement are still debating the best path forward, underscoring the complexities of grassroots political engagement in Nepal.

Security Measures Amid Unrest

In response to the unrest, the Nepal Army extended prohibitory orders in three districts of the Kathmandu Valley, while allowing limited public movement during specified hours to ease daily disruptions. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as normalcy gradually returns.

The reopening of Tribhuvan International Airport has prompted neighboring countries, including India, to coordinate the safe return of their nationals stranded by the crisis.

Rising Casualties

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the death toll from the protests, which escalated from Sunday evening, has now reached 34 fatalities. Clashes between security forces and protesters have raised concerns about escalating violence and political instability.

A Turning Point for Nepal

The protests led by Gen Z have exposed deep generational frustrations with political stagnation, corruption, and governance failures. As dialogue efforts intensify, the world watches closely to see whether Nepal’s youth-led movement can translate passion into a unified leadership structure and democratic reforms.
