
Outgoing US President Joe Biden has awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 notable figures from various fields, recognizing their extraordinary contributions to the country and the world. Among the distinguished honorees were Vogue editor Anna Wintour, U2 frontman Bono, and philanthropist George Soros, as well as other cultural, political, and activist leaders.
The ceremony, held at the White House, included a diverse group of recipients who have made significant impacts in their respective areas. President Biden expressed his admiration, stating, “Together, you leave an incredible mark on our country.”
Bono, known for his advocacy against poverty and support for HIV/AIDS awareness, has previously received France’s highest cultural honor and an honorary knighthood. Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988, was lauded for her work in fashion and for raising millions for AIDS research. Soros, a prominent philanthropist, was recognized for his contributions to democracy, human rights, and social justice.
Other honorees included actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox, with Fox being celebrated for his advocacy for Parkinson’s disease research. Hillary Clinton, who received a standing ovation, was recognized for her long-standing public service, including her historic run for the presidency in 2016.
Additional recipients included soccer star Lionel Messi, basketball legend Magic Johnson, and fashion designer Ralph Lauren. Humanitarian José Andrés, conservationist Jane Goodall, and educator Bill Nye were also among those honored.
The Medal of Freedom, first established by President John F. Kennedy, is the highest civilian award in the United States. Previous honorees include Simone Biles, Michelle Yeoh, and Steve Jobs.
