In one of his final acts as President of the United States, Joe Biden on Saturday awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction to Pope Francis during a phone call.
President Biden shared the news on the social media platform X, expressing his admiration for the Pope. “Pope Francis, your humility and your grace are beyond words, and your love for all is unparalleled. As the People’s Pope, you are a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world,” he wrote.
During their conversation, Biden and Pope Francis reportedly discussed global efforts to foster peace and alleviate suffering, reflecting their shared commitment to humanitarian values.
A statement released by the White House praised Pope Francis’s decades of service, particularly his dedication to the vulnerable and marginalized during his time in Argentina. It highlighted his role as a pastor who connects with children’s questions about faith, a leader who builds bridges with other religions, and a global figure urging humanity to protect the planet and strive for peace.
A Rare Honor
The Medal of Freedom with distinction is an extraordinary recognition, awarded sparingly. This marks the first time in four years that a recipient has received the honor at this level.
Earlier this month, President Biden conferred the Medal of Freedom upon 19 other individuals from various fields. Notable recipients included Hillary Clinton, philanthropist George Soros, soccer legend Lionel Messi, designer Ralph Lauren, fashion editor Anna Wintour, and actor Denzel Washington.
As Biden prepares to leave office, the award to Pope Francis underscores his administration’s focus on values of compassion, faith, and global unity.
